What Are Digital Caricatures – and Why Do They Work?

What Are Digital Caricatures
– and Why Do They Work?

Digital caricatures are real caricatures – I simply hand-draw each one live on iPad instead of paper. As guests watch their caricature take shape in just a few lively lines, the drawing itself becomes part of the entertainment.

Because the artwork is digital, it can also appear live on a big screen, carry your branding, be shared instantly and printed on the spot. That makes it a particularly flexible choice for corporate events, trade shows, conferences and brand activations.

See how each setup works, what I provide and what your guests receive.

I move around the event with my iPad, drawing guests wherever they happen to be – over drinks, while they’re chatting, or I’ll work around the tables and mingle with guests. It works much like traditional walkabout caricaturing: close-up, sociable and completely mobile, with no fixed drawing station. It’s a natural ice-breaker and a good way to get people talking at receptions, networking events and meet-and-greet situations.

Best for: Drinks receptions, networking events, meet-and-greets, parties and weddings.
Setup: Fully mobile – just me and the iPad.
Space needed: No dedicated area – I move around the event.
Guests receive: A digital copy shared instantly by email, QR code or AirDrop. On-the-spot printed copies are available as an optional extra.
Branding: Logos and themed backgrounds can still be built into the artwork.

I draw from a fixed position while each caricature appears live on a large screen, so everyone can watch the drawing develop stroke by stroke. It turns each caricature into part of the entertainment and works particularly well where you want something highly visible – at exhibitions, conferences, corporate events and busy receptions.

Best for: Corporate events, conferences, exhibitions, launches and busy receptions.
Setup: Fixed drawing position with the artwork displayed live on a large screen.
Screen: I can provide a TV and freestanding stand, or connect to a suitable venue screen.
Space needed: Around 1.5m × 1.5m for my drawing setup, with additional room for the screen where required.
Guests receive: A digital copy instantly, shared by email, QR code or AirDrop. On-the-spot printed copies are available as an optional extra.
Branding: Logos, event artwork and fully themed backgrounds can all be incorporated into the artwork.

Guests can have their finished caricature printed on the spot as a high-quality 6 × 4-inch postcard print, slipped into a protective sleeve and hung on a lanyard to wear around the event. They also receive a digital copy on their phone, so they get both an instant shareable version and a personalised keepsake to take home. Guests genuinely love these.

Best for: Corporate events, exhibitions, launches, parties and branded activations.
Printing: High-quality 6 × 4-inch postcard prints produced on the spot using my portable event printer.
Presentation: Each print is protected in a clear sleeve and supplied on a lanyard for the guest to wear during the event. Clients can also provide their own branded  lanyards.
Guests receive: A printed caricature to keep, plus a digital copy shared instantly to their phone by email, QR code or AirDrop.
Branding: Logos, sponsor artwork, event details and themed backgrounds can all be incorporated into the caricature design.
Setup: Printing can be added to either a Walkabout or Big Screen setup.

I can design the artwork around your event, brand or theme – from simple logo and brand colours to fully illustrated concepts that put guests into a completely different world. For example, guests might become an astronaut, zombie, Elvis or Homer Simpson! I create each template specifically for your campaign, with each guest’s caricature drawn live into the finished design.

Best for: Brand activations, launches, exhibitions, conferences, themed events and special occasions.
Customisation: From simple logo placement to fully illustrated characters, costumes and scenes.
Branding: Company colours, sponsor logos, event details and campaign artwork can all be incorporated.
Preparation: Background artwork is created in advance and agreed with you before the event.
Guests receive: Their finished themed caricature as a digital copy, with on-the-spot printed copies as an optional extra.
Works with: Big Screen displays, printed caricatures and digital sharing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Both are genuine hand-drawn caricatures. The main difference is the equipment and what can be done with the finished artwork. Traditional caricatures are drawn with pen on paper, while digital caricatures are drawn live on iPad and can be displayed on a big screen, branded, printed and shared instantly. If you prefer the look and feel of pen and paper, see my traditional caricatures.

Digital caricatures work particularly well at corporate events, exhibitions, conferences, product launches, drinks receptions and networking events, but they’re equally at home at weddings and private parties. Walkabout is ideal for close-up, sociable entertainment, while Big Screen, Printing and Themed options can create a much more visible branded experience.

Yes. I draw every caricature live on the iPad using an Apple Pencil, just as I would draw with pen and paper. Guests can watch the drawing develop from the first line to the finished caricature.

No. Every caricature is individually hand-drawn by me – there’s no AI generation, filters or automated caricature software involved. Even when I’m working with a pre-designed branded or themed template, the guest’s caricature is drawn completely live.

Most digital caricatures take around five minutes to draw, and I can usually draw around 8–12 guests per hour. Exact numbers depend on the event, whether I’m drawing individuals or groups, and whether printing or other options are included.

I bring the specialist equipment needed for the setup, including my iPad and Apple Pencil, plus the printer, screen and stand where booked. Walkabout requires virtually no setup; Big Screen needs access to standard mains power. I bring my own mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, so I’m not dependent on venue Wi-Fi for sharing caricatures.

Yes. I can draw couples and small groups together, although naturally they take a little longer than individual caricatures. At very busy events and exhibitions, drawing individuals is usually the quickest way to keep things moving.
