A few laughs early on and everyone loosens up for the day. People stop, watch, get involved, and keep chatting. During the wedding breakfast, the artist works the room – table hopping and keeping things ticking between courses.
Caricatures work well at other times too – the ‘lull’ between speeches and the party – or during cocktail hour when guests are drifting and chatting. They can run all day if needed – getting round most of the guests

How many guests can you draw during the wedding?
I work quickly to draw as many guests as possible during the time booked, usually focusing on individuals and couples.
Typically, I draw around 10–15 caricatures per hour depending on the mix. It’s less about getting through everyone, and more about creating a steady flow and a great atmosphere around it.
How long does each caricature take?
Classic black and white caricatures take around 3–4 minutes per person. A couple takes around 8 minutes.
That keeps things moving well and allows plenty of guests to take part without long waits.
What do guests receive?
Each guest or couple receives a hand-drawn caricature to take home on the day.
I use high-quality paper and professional marker pens. The drawings are rolled and fastened, ready to take away.
Do you need much space or special setup?
No — I bring everything needed and there’s almost no set-up time.
I usually move around guests, which works really well at weddings — joining conversations, entertaining people where they’re gathered, and fitting in naturally with the flow of the day. If you prefer, I can also work from a fixed spot.
When is the best time for caricatures?
The most popular times are during the drinks reception or in the evening.
During the reception, I draw while guests are mingling and photos are happening, and can also work around tables during the meal where appropriate.
In the evening, I’ll draw a mix of daytime and evening guests until the dancefloor takes over. It also works well during quieter moments like the lull or cocktail hour.
What makes caricatures a great addition to a wedding?
Caricatures are both live entertainment and a personalised wedding favour.
Guests enjoy watching the drawings come to life, and it naturally creates laughter and conversation. It fits easily into the day without interrupting anything.

How far in advance should we book?
Dates can fill up quickly, especially during peak wedding season, so it’s best to book as early as possible.

Some couples also display them during the reception so the collection builds through the evening, then guests collect them before they leave.

Founded in 1999, Sensible Pencil has drawn caricatures at more than 3,000 events worldwide, including hundreds of weddings ranging from small private celebrations to large-scale events.
Wedding caricatures are provided as traditional hand-drawn artwork, created live during the day or evening and given to guests as a personalised keepsake to take home.
Caricatures work particularly well during drinks receptions, wedding breakfasts, evening receptions and informal parts of the day, where guests are mingling and socialising.
Two main approaches are available:
- Walkabout caricatures – moving between guests and groups, drawing naturally within the flow of the day
- Seated caricatures – working from a fixed spot where guests come over to be drawn
